Every fall, flu season returns. Influenza spreads easily from person to person, and for some people, including young children, older adults, pregnant people and those with long-term health conditions, it can lead to serious illness.
Why a yearly flu vaccine? Flu viruses change over time, and protection from a vaccine fades. That is why public health agencies such as the CDC recommend a flu vaccine every season for most people 6 months and older. Early fall is a good time, though getting vaccinated later in the season can still help. Ask a healthcare provider or pharmacist whether the vaccine is right for you.
Everyday habits that help. Wash your hands often, cover coughs and sneezes, and stay home when you are sick so you do not pass illness to coworkers, classmates or family.
A good time for a checkup. A seasonal visit is also a chance to catch up on routine care: reviewing your medicines, checking blood pressure, and getting school, sports or work physicals done before deadlines arrive.
